Why Some Athletes Excel PDF Print E-mail

Whole Brain Thinkers Demonstrate Greater Athleticism

Recent research has solved the mystery of why some athletes excel in their sport at an early age. In the past, coaches had not been able to explain why select athletes had greater athleticism, speed & quickness, rhythm, balance, and coordination, or why they made plays while the majority of the team struggled with basic athletic movements and skills. Some were simply able to excel in all athletic endeavors.

This research has revealed that at an early age the more gifted athletes have developed a greater percentage of their brains, especially the right hemisphere. These athletes are Whole Brain Thinkers. The valuable contributions of the brain's right hemisphere include: Creativity, Imagination, Rhythm, Balance, Focus, Relaxed Concentration, Subconscious Functioning, and many more. This is what allows the “Whole Brain Thinking Performer” to see the game in slow motion, to appear to know what is going to happen before it happens, to be in the right place at the right time, and to perform gracefully and effortlessly.

The recent research confirms that this Whole Brain Thinking ability can be developed, that the brain can be grown and developed, in all people at any age. The key to this very important development is a training program that promotes Ambidexterity through a tremendous number and variety of drills and activities using the fingers, hands, and arms. The brain creates new and refined mental and motor maps, and not only grows but develops much greater efficiency. The same growth in the brain results from a tremendous number of footwork drills and total body movement activities. Every time we learn a new drill or activity, we develop the brain to a higher level of functioning.

The Brain in a Bag drills, skills, and activities are the result of lessons learned over more than 50 years of training athletes, and seeing great accomplishment and great brain growth by so many of the most outstanding athletes in practically every sport.

Balance the Brain and You Can Better Balance the Body.

The most successful students and the most successful people have great balance between the two sides of the body and the two sides of the brain.

Who is going to do the most important job in developing the TOTAL STUDENT? It will mainly fall on the shoulders of the exceptional Physical Education teachers and coaches and Classroom teachers. The majority of education in school is developing the left side of the Brain. But the HIGH ACHIEVERS in school and in life are the WHOLE BRAIN THINKERS who do a great job in developing both sides of the brain, the Corpus Collousum and the CONNECTIONS between the three major parts of the brain.

The schools that are doing a great job of growing their students' brains are those that take a short 3-5 minute break from academic subject material and have their students juggle, use the bricks, perform cross-crawl movements, march in place, draw figure 8's in the air, jog in place, and many other activities to activate the Right Hemisphere. Parents and Educators have the GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY and the responsibility to develop students into Whole Brain Thinkers. Most all the geniuses, inventors, composers, scientist, writers, great ATHLETE performers are or were Whole Brain Thinkers. Why is it critical to develop the Right Brain?  Because this is where the ability to become a genius lies. Gelb and Buzan state that everyone has the potential to be a genius. They state that we do not develop 1/100 of 1 percent of the brains POTENTIAL
